Professional Inspection: Spotting and Identifying Rodent Infestations

Mice and rat infestations are two common types of infestations that impact homes. While these infestations have similarities, they differ in scale, behavior, and danger.

Mouse infestation

During a mouse infestation, you may begin to notice small droppings, about 1/4 inch with pointed ends (similar to grains of rice). You might also notice physical signs of an infestation, such as small, scratchy, chew marks on packaging or minor wire/drywall damage. Mice also tend to nest inside walls or near heat sources, such as ovens and refrigerators, and in soft, fibrous materials. Due to mice being bolder rodents that like to explore, they are easier to trap.

Trapping

It’s best to use small, wooden snaps or multi-catch live boxes. Traps should be placed very close to each other, as mice only travel 5 to 10 feet from their nest or food. Effective bait options include peanut butter, small bits of chocolate, or nesting material like dental floss or cotton. 

Rat infestation

During a rat infestation, there may be large droppings, about 1/2 to 3/4 inch with blunt ends. Physical signs of an infestation include frayed heavy cables and gnawed wood joints. Rats tend to nest in dark, hidden, and undisturbed areas close to food and water. They may be found in wall cavities, attics, basements, and crawl spaces. Rats are highly cautious of new things. As a result, trapping them can be extremely difficult.

Trapping

It’s best to use large, rat-size traps or heavy-duty electronic traps. Traps should be placed along established wall runways as rats travel much farther than mice. Since rats are afraid of new things, it is most effective to pre-bait traps with food for 2 to 5 days without setting them so rats trust the trap before it’s activated. For bait, select high-moisture foods, meats, or peanut butter.
